Our Great Escape
Perhaps the most famous name in magic is Harry Houdini, an escape artist able to get out of impossible situations. Straitjackets, handcuffs, and prison cells could not keep Houdini bound. One time, however, he was stumped by a particular prison cell. No matter how hard he tried, Houdini could not figure out how to escape. Finally, when he was totally exhausted, he slumped to the floor and leaned against the door. Behold, the door opened, it had never been locked in the first place.
It is hard to convince those who have come to Jesus that they are no longer slaves to sin. Our slavery to sin was so much a part of us that until today, the shadow of it still looms over our lives. But Christian living begins with the understanding that you have died with Christ and need not obey sin any longer! This understanding is essential because you will never achieve true victory over sin if you do not believe within yourself that Christ has broken your bonds to sin. The old man is nailed to the cross with our Savior, and that’s why we can be set free. Spiritual victory begins not by doing, but by knowing and believing.
