As Christians, we can be like Houdini. We want to be free, but we don’t realise that our chains have already fallen off. Paul tells us in Romans 5:2-3: “How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” The doors have already swung wide open because our old nature has died with Jesus on the cross. We need not be imprisoned by sin any longer. We have been set free. 

It is hard to convince those who have come to Jesus that they are no longer slaves to sin. Our slavery to sin was so much a part of us that until today, the shadow of it still looms over our lives. But Christian living begins with the understanding that you have died with Christ and need not obey sin any longer! This understanding is essential because you will never achieve true victory over sin if you do not believe within yourself that Christ has broken your bonds to sin. The old man is nailed to the cross with our Savior, and that’s why we can be set free. Spiritual victory begins not by doing, but by knowing and believing.
